5-minute Walk – University of Virginia

Rates of daily walking for recreation, commuting to work, or getting to school have
declined dramatically in the United States in recent decades contributing to critical
issues such as childhood obesity and climate change. One important factor in this
population behavior shift is the trend towards designing communities to maximize
ease of driving rather than walking or other forms of human-scale active
transportation. In short, community design in rapidly growing areas has lost track of the
‘5-minute walk’ as an organizing principle; a building block that can help make
day- to-day living easier, more equitable, less costly, and better for our health and
the environment.
